21 CD's
(Consecutive Days) of Practice
All pre-college students at Mclelland Piano Studio are placed on one of 5 different student teams.    Throughout the 2008-2009 school year, students will see how many times they can practice 21 consecutive days (21 CD's) or 21 days in a row.

Students compete against themselves -- for each level reached, students win prizes which get better as you progress to higher levels.  Keep "climbing" levels throughout the year (from May-April), but winning teams and students will be acknowledged at the Fall Quarter 9th Week Evaluation and at Spring Spring Recital Awards Ceremony where prize bags will be presented.

Students will also be competing as a team against other teams.  The studio team with the highest average will win 21 CD's (compact discs) which will divided among team members (3 CD's per member, with remaining CD's to be donated to library with team members' names as the donors).  The CD's will be presented at the Spring Recital/Awards Ceremony.

Why 21 days?  Did you know that some studies say it takes 21 consecutive days of repeating something to make it a habit?  Our goal = to move information from short term memory to long term memory making it "automatic" and easy.  THIS is when we REALLY start enjoying our music-making.  And, this requires regular and consistent time at the instrument.

Many thanks to Donna Shugart for this wonderful idea.  It should be a fun science experiment for us all -- (with amazing benefits!)
